How to get to Koh Samui ?

Thailand Tips: Koh Samui was on your bucket list until you learned the flights weren’t budget-friendly? Cheer up as there are other straightforward ways of getting there!

Exploring places within Thailand tends to be easy and affordable, as there are companies that offer flights for as little as few dollars. But flying to Koh Samui is much more expensive, which turns many budget travelers away from visiting this stunning island on Thailand’s east coast. Few seem to know that there are cheaper ways to get to Samui that add more adventure and sightseeing to the experience, even if they take more time.

The cheapest way to get to Koh Samui is by taking a bus to Don Sak ferry terminal in Surat Thani, followed by a ferry ride to the island. Many travel agents offer combined tickets that include the two rides, so ask around where to purchase them; for a slightly higher fee, tickets are also available online. Depending on where you are traveling from, reaching Samui by land will cost between 500 and 1,000 THB per person while airfares start at around 3,000 THB, if booked far in advance.

Getting to Koh Samui from Bangkok, by land

How to get to Koh Samui from Bangkok? Head to the bus terminal called Sai Tai Mai from which buses operate daily, from early morning until about 8 PM. You’ll need to bring some patience along as it takes between 10 and 12 hours to reach Don Sak pier. The ferry ride to Koh Samui is fairly fast and takes an hour and a half, however waiting at the pier to board the boat can also last a few hours.

Our recommendation: travel from Phuket

If your travel plans are flexible and you are set out on seeing various parts of Thailand, why not visit another gorgeous island first? You can get a cheap flight from Bangkok to Phuket and continue to Samui after a few days. In this case, the bus ride from Phuket’s Terminal 2 to Don Sak takes 5 to 6 hours so if you leave Phuket at 9 AM, you will be in Samui around 4:30 PM.

While you are in Phuket you can spend your time in Bangtao Beach, which has to offer sea attractions, SUP Tour Phuket (Stand Up Paddle Boarding) and magical evenings in its beach clubs.
